If you're looking to buy a new stove, you've probably been told that gas stoves and electric stoves have their advantages and disadvantages. What are they? That depends on what you think is important.

This article is going to explain the advantages of both gas stoves and electric stoves and hopefully help you make an informed decision when buying a kitchen range.

Electric Cooktops

Pros

Cheaper to purchase

Gas cooktops are much more expensive than electric ones, even if they’re the same size. So if you're on a budget or just getting started in your home, electric is the way to go.

Easy to clean

Electric cooktops are generally easier to clean than gas stoves because they don't require you to use a stovetop cleaner or scrubber.

Cons

Remains hot long after cooking

Electric cooktops remain hot long after cooking, which can be dangerous if you're not aware of the heat. Gas burners usually turn off immediately when they're no longer being used.

Slower control

Electric cooktops have slower control compared to gas stoves. This means that it may take some time for your electric burner to go from simmering to boiling or vice versa. A gas stovetop will deliver more precise temperature control than an electric range because it uses a flame instead of electricity as its heat source.

Uneven cooking

The main issue with electric stoves is that they don't provide even heating. The heat comes from a coil underneath the ceramic surface, and often you will notice hot spots in different parts of your pan. This can be annoying if you're trying to cook something like eggs or pancakes and have to constantly move them around, so they don't burn.

Spills & stains can be baked on

Gas stoves are also easier to clean than electric ones because spills and stains tend to bake onto the surface of an electric cooktop rather than burn off. This can make cleaning up after cooking much messier than it needs to be, especially if you're making something like spaghetti sauce or chili, where red splatters tend to bleed into other areas of the stovetop as they cook over time.

Energy efficiency

Gas stoves use natural gas, so they don't require any electricity to run. Electric stoves, on the other hand, have to be plugged into an outlet and can't run without electricity. This means that they're not only more expensive but also less efficient than gas stoves.

Gas Cooktops

Pros

Easy to control

Gas stoves are easy to control because you only have one knob to worry about. With an electric stove, you have to adjust the heat level and time separately. And if one of those settings is just a bit off, it can ruin your meal.

No loss of power

With a gas stove, you don't have to worry about losing power. You can still cook even if there is no electricity in your house. This is not possible with an electric stove as it needs electricity to run.

High efficiency

Electric stoves are not as efficient as gas ones. This means that they will consume more energy compared to gas stoves which have higher thermal efficiency.

Cools quickly

Gas stoves cool down much quicker than electric stoves. This means that you can cook more food in a short period of time because there’s no waiting time between each meal.

Cons

Expensive purchase cost

Gas stoves are more expensive than electric stoves upfront. You'll have to spend money on the stove, the gas line and the installation process.

Difficult to clean

If you have a gas stove, you have to clean it after every use. If you have an electric stove, you can let things sit in there for days and not worry about them burning or sticking to the bottom of the oven.

Fire risk

Gas stoves can be dangerous because they’re fire hazards. If the pilot light goes out or there is no gas coming through the line, it can cause a fire in your home.

Conclusion

By now, you hopefully have a better idea of whether a gas stove or electric stove is the right choice for your home. The deciding factors will likely depend on your tastes, preferences and budget, but if you need help deciding, just remember one thing: make sure to go with what works best for you. The most important thing is that you're happy with your new appliance.

Also, remember, if you do decide to go with gas, then make sure you call a gas fitter to install your gas stove
