• First, ask your child's primary school for an "intent to apply" form. 

• Register online and complete the application. 

• Make sure you complete the application by the relevant deadline – late applications are rejected.

• If you need to supply additional information, such as disability details, include these at the application stage.

The selection process includes the opportunity class exam, which is tallied against their in-school academic performance. If they score highly enough, they'll be invited to join an opportunity class. 

The class offered depends on your child's score and where there's a place.

How to Prepare for the OC Exam

• Your child will sit two 30-minute papers. They're made up of 35 multiple choice questions designed to test general, mathematical and literary skills. 

• The maximum score is 300. 

• It's a computer-marked assessment, meaning your child needs to use black ink and carefully mark the right choice so it's read properly.
