Through years of revolution and evolution of mankind, as things have advanced so are human inventions. Out of all the superior things humans have invented to ease their lives Electricity is one of the most vital inventions humans have come up with. In today's world, Electricity is an integral part of our lives and one just can’t imagine a world without electrical power. It's not that Electricity brings glow in our lives but it has taken over the world as a Goddess. No matter what the thing is it does require an electrical connection to run and provide benefits, whether it be agriculture, education, or whatever sector you can name just can’t run without electrical power. It is now obvious that Electricity is the main backbone of the world's economy and without electricity, the world and humans won’t survive a day.
Even though we are showered with benefits from electricity, at the same time this invention can be deadly too, especially if not taken care of the right way. So if you are a property owner it's your top prioritized duty to always have a check and balance on your electrical appliances and supplies at your residence to avoid any casualties or major accidents. So, some of the major safety measures one can take into account are always calling upon a certified electrician to have regular checkups at your sites and having safety switches installed at your residences for automatic defense from electrical fires. Though these measures are vital, having such safety switches installed properly is also an art in itself and proceeding with caution is of utmost importance.
What is an RCD Safety Switch?
RCD also known as Residual Current Device, is nothing but a life-saving electrical device, which is designed to prevent living beings from getting electrical shocks and help us avoid any electrical fires having them installed at your properties gets you safe from any electrical hazards.
There are times when a simple human can’t detect potential electrical threats at their residences this is the time when RCD safety switches play their part and get a prompt power cut-off in life-threatening movements. These switches automatically break the electrical flow and keep you from getting shocks from touching a naked live wire.
Electrical Faults are more like surprises; they tend to occur without an invitation and in such situations only RCD safety switches are the saviours, they will break the power flow and provide you protection against deadly electrical shocks and potential injuries.
How does an RCD Switch Work?
These switches are designed for continuous supervision of current flow between neutral and active wires. Mostly, under normal conditions, the amount of current flow between these wires is somewhat the same, but at times when there is an unbalance in the currents, RCD switches are auto-activated and they tend to break the flow of current and gets us a power cut-off to avoid in a major fatality.
One thing to be noted is that RCD switches are extremely sensitive and super fast that they are designed to stop the electrical flow within 20 milliseconds and save a person in danger like a bolt. These switches get the power cut even at a higher speed a person gets a heart attack making it clear that it does save human lives from electrical shocks that might have cost them their lives. So in simpler words, RCD switches basically keep you protected from all appliances, tools, and wires that can get you electrical shocks.
Different Types of RCD Safety Switches !!!!
There are a total of 4 different types of RCD safety switches:
-
Portable:
They are adjusted on extension leads & powerboards and will only measure the current flow on the devices switched in these boards.
-
Powerpoint:
These switches are installed on powerpoints and are distinguished by test buttons on faceplates. They allow protection to appliances at specific places at the house i.e washroom, kitchen &, etc.
-
Fixed:
Found in fuse boxes and offer protection for circuits. They are designed to provide a maximum amount of protection as they tend to protect all power outlets and all the connected appliances and wirings attached to those circuits.
-
Meter Box Mounted:
Such switches are generally installed alongside circuit breakers.
Reliability & Efficiency of RCD’s …
It has been disclosed in studies that RCD safety switches are extremely reliable if we talk about the numbers so they are rated 9/10 on reliability. But to get the best out of them they need to be inspected on a routine basis or else they can be dangerous too. They are super-efficient and get you protected from all sorts of electrical shocks and also prevent your electrical appliances from electrical fires. Saving you major costs & Lives.
How to know if your home is RCD protected?
The procedure is quite simple and easy & is easily pickable by any homeowner and is something everyone should know. The first thing is to take a walk to your consumer component and look for a push-button with T or Test written on it.
As we know RCD safety switches are essential to keep yourself and your property from electrical fires, shocks, electrocution, or any sort of earth faults. So having them installed at your residence is super important.
